2020 Shinn ADHD Distortion Board Review (138x41.5)
Test Conditions
Butter flat to medium sized chop, ridden with boots
Three Word Summary
Accessible Wakestyle Performance
First Impressions:
The ADHD is Shinn's dedicated wakestyle board, and is the sturdiest of the range to withstand the high forces required from powered takeoffs and landings. It has fairly thick, but square rails along the length of the board and significant channelling both in the centre and tips to provide loads of grip. The outline is quite curved with a moderate taper toward the tips, giving ease of control when scooping the board off the water for tricks or big air.
Despite the heavy channelling, the board retains a decent amount of flex to help catapult you off the water and soften impacts with the water. As expected from a wakestyle board, it also benefits from significant rocker to help in choppy conditions and to ensure trouble free landings.
The ADHD comes in two sizes; a 138x41.5 for lighter riders, stronger wind conditions or for straps use and a 142x43 for heavier riders / a more focused boots board.
On The Water:
Riding the ADHD is very comfortable; the generous rocker keeps the tips clear ensuring a splash free ride and its flex gives it a ride which even old timers like myself can happily ride for hours - a huge plus from my perspective. Generally, boards with a high rocker lose out in their bottom end, but the ADHD did not feel draggy and was capable of pretty high speed when you want to push it.
Its grip and drive is immediately noticeable, allowing it to plough upwind with ease and to really dig in against the kites pull in powered conditions - making an ideal choice to help control a grunty C kite. Its grip also makes it a great performer for big air, allowing you to keep your footing as the power increases with a rising kite, whilst also keeping an upwind trajectory for a perfect take-off. Its channels, flex and rocker make big-air landings cushioned and trouble-free, even when the water conditions leave a lot to be desired!
The ADHD really shines when you push it for some wakestyle. The channelling means you get loads of grip with even pretty small fins, yet making it child's play to switch tips after a trick or before a transition. The grip which gives it great upwind drive also works great to show your kite who's boss, forcing it hard toward the edge of the window for extreme explosive pop and all-important slack to ease handle-passing.
The rocker and outline make it very easy to scoop off the water and get height with ease, and is very predictable and confidence inspiring - yielding great performance and consistency.
In Summary:
I found the ADHD to be board which I gelled with immediately - comfortable in a wide range of conditions and one which ticks many boxes in terms of general usability. Its great drive is a real asset which benefits its performance for both big air, freestyle and wakestyle, and also delivers huge consistent pop and assured landings to keep your hair dry and a smile on your face!
Its an ideal board for anyone who is big into wakestyle, but also brings performance and user friendliness to attract a much wider audience too.
